With the recent outbreak of COVID-19, evaluating the epidemic risk appears to be a pressing issue of global concern and one of the major challenges recently. In the fight against pandemics, the ability to understand, model, and forecast the transmission dynamics of infectious diseases plays a crucial role. This paper provides an overview of foundational compartment models and introduces the Susceptible-Exposed-Infected-Containing-3-Substates-Recovered-Dead model to study the dynamics of COVID-19. A meticulous data calibration procedure is employed to study the evolution trend of an actual pandemic using real-world data from Victoria, Australia. Additionally, the paper discusses innovative applications of epidemic models to the insurance industry, which are currently under investigation. Through the use of the newly developed analytically tractable model, insurance companies are able to determine fair premium levels during an outbreak. Moreover, the paper provides practical guidance for insurance companies by examining the variation in reserve levels over time.

This paper provides a review of cyber risk research accomplished in different disciplines, with a primary goal to aid researchers in the field of insurance and actuarial science in identifying potential research gaps as well as leveraging useful models and techniques that have been considered in the literature. We highlight the recent advancements in cyber risk prediction, modeling, management, and insurance achieved in different domains including computer engineering, actuarial science, and business studies. The surveyed works are classified according to their respective modeling approaches, allowing readers to more easily compare the technical aspects of the surveyed works and spot out research gaps based on the research tools of their liking. We conclude this paper with a summary of possible research directions that are identified from the review.
Assessment of Combined Karyotype Analysis and Chromosome Microarray Analysis in Prenatal Diagnosis: A Cohort Study of 3710 Pregnancies

Objective. The current study aimed to compare the characteristics of chromosome abnormalities detected by conventional G-banding karyotyping, chromosome microarray analysis (CMA), or fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH)/CNVplex analysis and further explore the application value of combined karyotype analysis and CMA in prenatal diagnosis with a larger sample size. Methods. From March 2019 to March 2021, 3710 amniocentesis samples were retrospectively collected from women who accepted prenatal diagnosis at 16 to 22 + 6 weeks of pregnancy. The pregnant women underwent karyotype analysis and CMA. In the case of fetal chromosomal mosaicism, FISH or CNVplex analysis was utilized for validation. Results. In total, 3710 G-banding karyotype results and CMA results from invasive prenatal diagnosis were collected. Of these, 201 (5.41%) fetuses with an abnormal karyotype were observed. The CMA analysis showed that the abnormality rate was 9.14% (340/3710). The detection rate of CMA combined with karyotype analysis was 0.35% higher than that of CMA alone and 4.08% higher than that of karyotyping alone. Additionally, 12 cases had abnormal karyotype analysis, despite normal CMA results. To further detect the chromosome mosaicism, we used FISH analysis to correct the karyotype results of case 1. Correspondingly, a total of 157 cases showed abnormal CMA results but normal karyotype analysis. We also found chromosomal mosaicism in 4 cases using CMA. Moreover, CNVplex and CMA demonstrated that representative case 15 was mosaicism for trisomy 2. Conclusions. Conventional G-banding karyotyping and CMA have their own advantages and limitations. A combination of karyotype analysis and CMA can increase the detection rate of chromosome abnormalities and make up for the limitation of signal detection.

X-chromosome inactivation (XCI) is the form of dosage compensation in mammalian female cells to balance X-linked gene expression levels of the two sexes. Many diseases are related to XCI due to inactivation escape and skewing, and the symptoms and severity of these diseases also largely depend on the status of XCI. They can be divided into 3 types: X-linked diseases, diseases that are affected by XCI escape, and X-chromosome aneuploidy. Here, we review representative diseases in terms of their definition, symptoms, and XCI’s role in the pathogenesis of these diseases.

This paper studies the open-loop equilibrium strategies for a class of non-zero-sum reinsurance–investment stochastic differential games between two insurers with a state-dependent mean expectation in the incomplete market. Both insurers are able to purchase proportional reinsurance contracts and invest their wealth in a risk-free asset and a risky asset whose price is modeled by a general stochastic volatility model. The surplus processes of two insurers are driven by two standard Brownian motions. The objective for each insurer is to find the equilibrium investment and reinsurance strategies to balance the expected return and variance of relative terminal wealth. Incorporating the forward backward stochastic differential equations (FBSDEs), we derive the sufficient conditions and obtain the general solutions of equilibrium controls for two insurers. Furthermore, we apply our theoretical results to two special stochastic volatility models (Hull–White model and Heston model). Numerical examples are also provided to illustrate our results.

This paper studies deep learning approaches to find optimal reinsurance and dividend strategies for insurance companies. Due to the randomness of the financial ruin time to terminate the control processes, a Markov chain approximation-based iterative deep learning algorithm is developed to study this type of infinite-horizon optimal control problems. The optimal controls are approximated as deep neural networks in both cases of regular and singular types of dividend strategies. The framework of Markov chain approximation plays a key role in building the iterative equations and initialization of the algorithm. We implement our method to classic dividend and reinsurance problems and compare the learning results with existing analytical solutions. The feasibility of our method for complicated problems has been demonstrated by applying to an optimal dividend, reinsurance and investment problem under a high-dimensional diffusive model with jumps and regime switching.
Group characteristics of tea growers relative to weed management: a case study in southwestern China

Farmer training is important to improve weed management practices in tea cultivation. To explore the group characteristics of tea growers, we interviewed 354 growers in Guizhou Province, China. Sixty-one percent of the respondents planted tea for companies or cooperative groups, and 56% managed tea gardens larger than 10 ha. Self-employed tea growers tended to be older and smallholders, and to apply herbicides and conduct weed control less frequently (P < 0.05). Approximately 87% of the respondents conducted weed control two to four times yr−1, 83% spent between $200 and $2,000 ha−1 yr−1 for weed control, and 42% thought weed control costs would decrease by 5 years from this study. Twenty-eight species were mentioned by the respondents as being the most serious. According to canonical correspondence analysis, latitude, altitude, being self-employed or a member of a cooperative, having training experience in tea-garden weed management, and frequency and cost of weed control in tea gardens had significant (P < 0.05) influence on the composition of most troublesome weed species listed by respondents. Among the respondents, 60% had had farmer’s training on weed management in tea gardens. Of these, a significant number (P < 0.05) tended to think weed control costs would decrease, and a nonsignificant number (P > 0.05) tended to conduct weed control more frequently and have lower weed management costs in their tea gardens.
Enhanced supercapacitor performance based on 3D porous graphene with MoO2 nanoparticles

Three dimensional (3D) porous graphene decorated with MoO2 nanoparticles were successfully synthesized by hydrothermal method and characterized by SEM and TEM, x-ray diffraction, Raman spectra, x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, nitrogen adsorption–desorption analysis and electrochemical experiments. The results revealed that the in situ formed monoclinic MoO2 nanoparticles were randomly decorated on the surface of graphene sheets and the obtained graphene–MoO2 nanohybrids were 3D porous structures. The mass ratio of molybdenum precursor with GO has effects on the specific surface area and the electrochemical properties of the nanocomposite. The M30G1 (the mass ratio of molybdenum precursor with GO was 30:1) composite electrode exhibited a higher specific capacitance and better cycling stability. The specific capacitances were 356 F/g at the current density of 0.1 A/g in KOH electrolyte, which predicted their potential application in energy storage. The electrochemical performance of M30G1 composite was also investigated in Na2SO4 electrolyte, which was poorer than that in KOH electrolyte. Therefore, the chosen of electrolyte is important to materials performance.

This work focuses on finding optimal dividend payment and capital injection policies to maximize the present value of the difference between the cumulative dividend payment and the possible capital injections with delays. Starting from the classical Cramér–Lundberg process, using the dynamic programming approach, the value function obeys a quasi-variational inequality. With delays in capital injections, the company will be exposed to the risk of financial ruin during the delay period. In addition, the optimal dividend payment and capital injection strategy should balance the expected cost of the possible capital injections and the time value of the delay period. In this paper, the closed-form solution of the value function and the corresponding optimal policies are obtained. Some limiting cases are also discussed. A numerical example is presented to illustrate properties of the solution. Some economic insights are also given.

The influence of fluid droplet properties on the droplet-on-demand jetting of a Newtonian model fluid (water–isopropanol–ethylene glycol ternary system) has been studied. The composition of the fluid was adjusted to investigate how the Ohnesorge number ($\mathit{Oh}$) influences droplet formation (morphology and speed) by a microfabricated short-channel shear-mode piezoelectric transducer. The fluid space for satellite-free single droplet formation was indeed found to be bound by upper and lower $\mathit{Oh}$ limits, but these shift approximately linearly with the piezo pulse voltage amplitude ${V}_{o} $, which has a stronger influence on jetting characteristics than pulse length. Therefore the jettable fluid space can be depicted on a ${V}_{o} {{\ndash}}\mathit{Oh}$ diagram. Satellite-free droplets of the model fluid can be jetted over a wide $\mathit{Oh}$ range, at least 0.025 to 0.5 (corresponding to $Z= {\mathit{Oh}}^{\ensuremath{-} 1} $ of 40 to 2), by adjusting ${V}_{o} $ appropriately. Air drag was found to dominate droplet flight, as may be expected. This can be accurately modelled to yield droplet formation time, which turned out to be $20\text{{\ndash}} 30~\lrm{\ensuremath{\mu}} \mathrm{s} $ under a wide range of jetting conditions. The corresponding initial droplet speed was found to vary linearly with ${V}_{o} $, with a fluid-dependent threshold but a fluid-independent slope, and a minimum speed of about $2~\mathrm{m} ~{\mathrm{s} }^{\ensuremath{-} 1} $. This suggests the existence of iso-velocity lines that run substantially parallel to the lower jetting boundary in the ${V}_{o} {{\ndash}}\mathit{Oh}$ diagram.

How to accurately determine carrier mobility and density in organic semiconducting materials is a very important subject for their optoelectronic applications including light-emitting diodes, solar cells, and thin film field-effect transistors. In this work, we report on a unique data analysis procedure for space-charge limited currents to simultaneously obtain the carrier density and mobility in semiconducting organic-materials. This procedure has been used for a few newly synthesized perylene tetracarboxylic diimide (PDI) derivatives with tunable π-stack structures without altering the electronic characteristic of individual molecules. How π-stack structural variation and residual carrier density affect electron transport performance will be discussed.
Enhancing bulk metallic glass formation in Ni–Nb–Sn-based alloys via substitutional alloying with Co and Hf

Bulk metallic glasses have been formed over a fairly wide composition range (54–62 at.% Ni, 32–36 at.% Nb, and 3–11 at.% Sn) in the Ni–Nb–Sn ternary system. Partial substitution of Co for Ni and Hf for Nb improves the glass-forming ability, eventually leading to 4 mm glassy rods at the Ni56Co3Nb28Hf8Sn5 composition. The positive effects of these alloying elements have been explained based on a systematic monitoring of the amount and morphology of the competing crystalline phases as a function of the Co and Hf contents.

Photocrosslinking has identified the joiner between domains 2 and 3 [J(23)] as folding near domain 5 (D5), a highly conserved helical substructure of group II introns required for both splicing reactions. D5 RNAs labeled with the photocrosslinker 4-thiouridine (4sU) reacted with highly conserved nucleotides G588 and A589 in J(23) of various intron acceptor transcripts. These conjugates retained some ribozyme function with the lower helix of D5 crosslinked to J(23), so they represent active complexes. One partner of the γ·γ′ tertiary interaction (A587·U887) is also in J(23); even though γ·γ′ is involved in step 2 of the splicing reaction, D5 has not previously been found to approach γ·γ′. Similar crosslinking patterns between D5 and J(23) were detected both before and after step 1 of the reaction, indicating that the lower helix of D5 is positioned similarly in both conformations of the active center. Our results suggest that the purine-rich J(23) strand is antiparallel to the D5 strand containing U32 and U33. Possibly, the interaction with J(23) helps position D5 correctly in the ribozyme active site; alternatively, J(23) itself might participate in the catalytic center.

Si3N4 ceramics are excellent metal cutting materials. The cutting behavior can be improved by hard particle dispersion phase hardening and heat treatment so as to reduce glass phase in the grain boundaries. Compared with cemented carbide tools, the cutting life of the composite Si3N4 cutting tool is about 10-100 times longer, and the optimum cutting speed is about 3-10 times faster. It performs well in cutting hardened tools, nickel based alloys, and other hard materials and can sustain shock loads in operations such as milling, planing and other types of interrupted cutting. Applications in various fields show that machining efficiency can be increased by 3-10 times resulting in savings of time, electricity, and machining of 30-70% or even more.
